Our
Mission To become a community of people whose lives are devoted to God and others. Our Values Spiritual Growth ![]() By "spiritual growth" we are not referring to Biblical knowledge alone. True spiritual growth results from a relationship with Christ and is evidenced by a transformed life. What does a transformed life look like? We believe that when a person looks to Jesus Christ as the one who guides his or her life, there are a few things that take place. First, you realize that you are forgiven and accepted by God himself. Secondly you are empowered to let go of destructive behaviors. And finally, you learn that you have a purpose in the world beyond survival, personal acheivement, and/or the accumulation of things. You develop love for people and strength in the midst of challenges that goes beyond what is possible on your own. ![]() Church Responsibility When we experience God's love, we are motivated to love others within the church and give of ourselves for the benefit of each other. We exist not as a gathering of individuals but rather as a true community that is united by love for one another. This type of community is a place of encouragement, grace and accountability. Missional Living ![]() When we live missionally, we see every moment of life as an opportunity to share the love of Christ with those outside of the church. What this means is that we exist to extend the same grace and compassion that we have received from Jesus Christ to the people we encounter every day. |
A Typical Approach Typically, churches attempt to accomplish their mission through an organizational approach. This approach focuses on programs as the primary means for fulfilling various aspects of the church's mission. The church asks, "What activities are we going to do to fulfill our mission?" And programs are the response. ![]() The problem is that with an organizational approach, people can become very busy doing church related activities, yet fail to grow in Christ-like character. It's also possible for people to attend programs without ever building relationships with others inside of the church. Furthermore, people tend to become so consumed by church activity that they have no time to build relationships with people outside of the church. The result is that people gain a false sense of spirituality based on how active they are in the church, yet fail to accomplish the mission and values of the church as a whole. Our Approach At Evangel, we believe that the entire mission and values should be fulfilled among each of the sub-communities that exist within the overall church community. What we mean is that instead of people meeting for a
program that addresses one aspect of the mission, each community
within the overall church should exist for the mission and strive
to grow in all values at all times. The question that should be asked in this approach is, "Who is Jesus Christ leading us to become?" Of course this approach will lead to certain activities. However, church activity is only an expression of the transformation that is taking place in an individual and community rather than an end in itself. We are excited about this approach and believe that this is what being a part of the church was meant to be. |
